About The School

East Union Elementary: A Gift from Our Community

East Union Elementary School was completed in December of 2011.  It houses two sections of each grade level:  kindergarten through grade five.  In addition, there are classrooms for junior kindergarten, Title I reading and mathematics interventionists, special education resource, and talented and gifted programs.

The building is an annex to the middle and high school facility.  Our JK-5 students share the concourse, auditorium, music and band rooms, art room, and computer lab with the secondary students.  We are fortunate to have our own elementary gymnasium, which features a beautiful eagle mural created by a reknowned Iowa artist Ray "Bubba" Sorensen.  The secondary building has also graciously "loaned" us two classrooms for our elementary library and our before and after school program.

The East Union Early Childhood Center is also housed in the new building.  Four classrooms host preschool and daycare for children aged two-and-a-half through five.  Three playgrounds are available for the enjoyment of all of our students; fresh air and exercise are vital for learning and growing!

East Union Elementary boasts differentiated literacy and mathematics programs, standards-based grading and reporting, updated technology with 1:1 devices available for all third through fifth grade students and SMART boards in all classrooms, STEM science materials, and the most updated curriculum resources available for reading, writing, and mathematics instruction and learning.  Our classrooms and the elementary library are filled with thousands of books, and we regularly add to these collections.  Teachers collaborate weekly to plan lessons that support the Iowa Core Curriculum Standards.  All teachers participate in continuous, embedded professional development training known as the "Teacher Advancement Program" or "TAP."  Teachers and the principal are learning and practicing the most effective teaching methods, and they are regularly observed and supported by other teachers and the principal.

Five of our teachers are currently pursuing graduate degrees:  four are working on their Masters Degrees, and one is completing a doctorate! Four teachers and the principal currently hold Masters Degrees.  We are life-long learners, just like our students!

Learning goes beyond academics.  We have high expectations for productive, collaborative behavior, and we practice this through "Positive Behavior and Instructional Supports (PBIS).  We also incorporate bullying prevention with the use of the Olweus program.

We are proud of our students, our staff members, and our community, and we invite you to visit any time.  We are forever grateful for our beautiful facility:  a gift from our community.  Go Eagles!!
